HP SFP Basis: J4858C vs J4859C

As an important component of networking accessories, HP ProCurve transceivers are wildly applied to their relevant switches or routes. HP SFP consists of three versions: revision A, revision B and revision C. Actually, there is no much difference between these three versions. Some enrichments will merely be added in the newest version. The “revision C” SFPs, such as J4858C, J4859C and J4860C, are supported in all ProCurve products with SFP ports. In this article we will introduce the basis of “revision C” and place emphasis on HP SFPs: J4858C vs J4859C.

What Is J4858C?

HP SFP J4858C transceiver module is a small form-factor pluggable Gigabit SX transceiver and designed for a wide range of HP equipment with high performance and reasonable price (FS.COM: US$ 10.00). J4858C SFP provides 1000Base-SX throughput up to 550m over multimode fibre (MMF) at a nominal wavelength of 850nm by using a LC connector. This transceiver is hot-swappable input/output device which allows a Gigabit Ethernet port to link with a fibre optic network and can be mixed and deployed with other OEM or third party transceivers.

What Is J4859C?

HP SFP J4859C is a 1000Base-LX SFP 1310nm 10km transceiver module which provides a low cost (FS.COM: US$ 12.00) and high-performance connection. It is compatible with all HP series switches and modules with SFP ports. As a small form-factor pluggable (SFP) Gigabit LX transceiver, it provides a full-duplex Gigabit solution up to 10 km (single mode) or 550 m (multimode).

J4858C vs J4859C: What Are the Differences?

Although HP SFP J4858C and J4859C can be used in any HP ProCurve switches with SFP ports as stated above, they still have some differences.
Form Type SFP SFP
Wavelength 850nm 1310nm
Interface LC duplex LC duplex
Cable Type MMF MMF*/SMF**
TX Power -9.5 ~ - 3dBm -9.5 ~ -3dBm
Commercial Temperature Range 0 to 70°C (32 to 158°F) 0 to 70°C (32 to 158°F)
Max Data Rate 1000Mbps 1000Mbps
Max Cable Distance 550m over OM2 MMF 10km over SMF
Optical Components VCSEL 850nm FP 1310nm
DOM Support No No
Receiver Sensitivity < -17dBm < -23dBm
Protocols MSA Compliant IEEE 802.3z SFF-8472 MSA Compliant IEEE 802.3ah-2004
According to the comparison chart, you should have an intuitive knowledge about HP SFPs: J4858C vs J4859C in the aspects of wavelength, cable type, max cable distance and etc. The larger network you need, the higher the cost of pluggable optical transceiver modules will be. In order to significantly reduce expenditure, it is possible to use HP compatible J4858C and J4859C transceivers.

Conclusion

To sum up, we have discussed the basic concept and showed the differences between HP SFP J4858C and J4859C. As a third party OEM/ODM manufacturer and supplier, FS.COM can also provide these two types of HP compatible SFP transceivers to meet your data center needs. You can make a choice based on your different demands and situations. Except HP, we can supply compatible fiber optic transceiver modules coming from other brands, like Cisco, Dell and Juniper etc with a competitive price.

FS S3800-48T4S 48 Port Switch Introduction

It is well known that cabling system in data center consists of multiple devices, such as fiber optic transceiver, fiber optic patch cable, network switch and etc. As a member of the whole cabling system, 48 port switch with high density cabling plays a critical role to satisfy different sizes of networking deployment. In order to help you better understand 48 port switch, in this article we will mainly focus on FS S3800-48T4S 48 port switch introduction and its connection with transceivers and cables. FS S3800-48T4S 48 Port Switch Overview As a part of S3800 series family, FS S3800-48T4S is a 48 10/100/1000Base-T RJ45 copper ports and 4 10G SFP+ ports Gigabit switch that is designed for medium or larger network environment. This fully managed switch with fixed 10G SFP+ ports for uplinks can satisfy the demand for now and future. In addition, FS S3800-48T4S 48 port switch comes with two separate supplies: single power and dual power versions which can be used as alternatives and ...

What is SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Cable?

DAC cable, or “Direct Attach Copper Cable”, is a type of copper cable which is similar to coaxial cable and also a form of high speed cable with SFP connectors on each end. As for the market nowadays, there are mainly three kinds of DAC according to the transmission rate: 10G SFP+ DAC, 40G QSFP+ DAC and 100G QSFP28 DAC in order to meet the increasing demand for cost-efficient delivery of more bandwidth. Today we will introduce the SFP+ DAC cable with the focus on types and advantages of SFP+ DAC cable. The Types of SFP+ Direct Attach Copper Cable SFP+ direct attach copper cable, also known as twinax cable, is an SFP+ cable assembly used in rack connections between servers and switches. It consists of a high speed copper cable and two SFP+ copper modules. It is widely used for short-distance and high speed Internet, such as gigabit network card, Gigabit switch, million server and etc. In general, SFP+ direct attach copper cable has two types, SFP+ active direct attach copper cable ...

What Is the Difference: Twinax vs Twisted Pair

With the passage of time and the development of information era by leaps and bounds, the demand for more bandwidth and data transmission to satisfy the ever-increasing number of operating systems and applications is becoming a cumulatively common trend. As the media types of transmitting signals, the popularization of SFP cable and Ethernet cable/twisted pair cable have been the tendency towards data center interconnection applications and can be ascribed to the domination of Cat5e copper cabling and 1000BASE-T over the years. So in this article, we will concentrate on the brief introduction to the cables: twinax vs twisted pair and their corresponding application considerations. Twinax vs Twisted Pair: What Is SFP Twinax Cable? Twinax vs twisted pair: how to understand the concept? SFP cable, sometimes called as 10G SFP+ cable, SFP+ DAC twinax cable, is a kind of high speed cable with Small Form Factor Pluggable Plus on either end. SFP twinax cable which displaces two optical mod...
